The two entrances to New Melones Lake are accessed from Highway 49 between Angels Camp and Sonora.
Most travelers coming from the south would do best taking Highway 108 off Highway 99 in Modesto or Highway 120 at Manteca.
From the northern Central Valley, Highway 4 off Highway 99 in Stockton is the best route. Highway 4 is narrower and windier than 120/108, but it has been undergoing improvements in recent years.
