BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Due to Tropical Storm Debby, some local governments have started making state of emergency declarations.
Brunswick County
Brunswick County Chairman Randy Thompson declared one effective Tuesday, which includes a voluntary evacuation of low-lying and flood-prone areas of unincorporated Brunswick County. The county says this allows the sheriff’s office to control people moving in and out and to move people within roadways potentially impacted by flooding or fallen trees.

The Town of Shallotte declared a state of emergency on Tuesday. It was signed by Mayor Walt Eccard. No evacuations, curfews or restricted access were included by the town.
Boiling Spring Lakes
The City of Boiling Spring Lakes on Tuesday also declared a state of emergency, though no evacuations, curfews or restricted access are anticipated by the city at the moment. The declaration does order law enforcement and employees to cooperate with the city’s emergency response plan. It was signed by Mayor Jeff Winecoff.
The City of Southport declared a state of emergency Tuesday in response to the threat of severe weather. The state of emergency will remain in effect until further notice, and the city’s emergency operations center will activate at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
Ocean Isle Beach
The Town of Ocean Isle Beach also declared a state of emergency, and a voluntary is ordered effective at 8 a.m. on August 7.
Due to the high probability of life-threatening flood waters on the coast and inland over the next few days, town officials advise to consider evacuating since roads in the area could become impassable.
Pender County
Pender County declared a state of emergency Tuesday, with the emergency operations center set to activate at 8 a.m. Wednesday. No evacuations, curfews or restricted access were included by the county, but residents are encouraged to pay attention to emergency alerts. All county officers will be closed Wednesday.
Columbus County
Columbus County declared a state of emergency Tuesday, though no evacuations, curfews or restricted access were included by the county. The declaration does order law enforcement and employees to cooperate with the county’s emergency response plan. It was declared by Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Ricky Bullard.
The City of Whiteville declared a state of emergency Tuesday, though no evacuations, curfews or restricted access were included by the city. The declaration does order law enforcement and employees to cooperate with the city’s emergency response plan. It was declared by Mayor Terry Mann.
The Town of Chadbourn declared a state of emergency Tuesday, though no evacuations, curfews or restricted access were included by the town. The declaration does order law enforcement and employees to cooperate with the town’s emergency response plan. It was declared by Mayor Phillip Britt.
